computing

INTENT
Technology is changing the lives of everyone; many of the jobs and careers that our children will undertake have not yet been invented. Through teaching computing, we equip children to participate in a rapidly changing world where work and leisure activities are increasingly transformed by technology.

It is our intention to inspire and enable children to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information both purposefully and with clarity. We also focus on developing the skills necessary for children to be able to be discerning consumers and creators of information in all of its forms and to do so with confidence and security.
Computational thinking is a major factor in enabling children to be confident, creative and independent learners and it is our intention that children have every opportunity available to allow them to develop and personalise this skill in all curriculum areas.

AIMS
The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:
  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
  • can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
  • can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
  • are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
Implementation
We follow a broad and balanced computing curriculum that builds on previous learning and provides both support and challenge for learners. Our scheme of work ensures the progression of skills and covers all aspects of the computing curriculum. All classes will have a scheduled computing lesson each week and may also be taught computing alongside other curriculum subjects. Children’s work will be stored on google drive and may be set and turned in on google classroom for reference and assessment. We wish to ensure that computing is embedded in our whole school curriculum and that opportunities for enhancing learning by using technology are always taken.

Impact:
We encourage our children to enjoy and value the curriculum we deliver. We want learners to discuss, reflect and appreciate the impact computing has on their learning, development and well-being.
Finding the right balance with technology is key to an effective education and a healthy life-style. We feel the way we implement computing helps children realise the need for the right balance and one they can continue to build on in their next stage of education and beyond.

We encourage regular discussions between staff and pupils to best embed and understand this. The way pupils showcase, share, celebrate and publish their work will best show the impact of our curriculum. We also look for evidence through reviewing pupil’s knowledge and skills digitally through Google Drive and Classroom and observing learning regularly. Progress of our computing curriculum is demonstrated through outcomes and the record of coverage in the process of achieving these outcomes.

We take internet safety extremely seriously. We have an Online Safety Policy that provides guidance for  teachers and children about how to use the internet safely. Every year group participates in lessons on e-safety and children understand how to stay safe when using technology.
