It has been a lovely warm start back to the last half term. The children have settled back in to routines and we have started our new learning. I am really sorry but we have not managed to get any photos this week as we have been so busy!
In English, we have started reading 'The Lost Thing' by Shaun Tan. We have been exploring the characters, writing character descriptions and using adjectives, similes and metaphors. The story was also remade into a short film which we will be using in class to help us with some writing. In History, we are starting to learn about the Shang Dynasty, this week we learnt about how Shang people would make decisions, and why they wrote on turtle shells. We are really enjoying the book below which is helping learn new facts in an interesting way! A visit from the ducklings! This week, Year 3 and 5 were lucky enough to have some gorgeous fluffy ducklings come and visit. We learnt about what they like to eat, where they live, and how they fly…or not! A huge thank you to Sharon and Willow for bringing them in and letting us have such a great experience. This week, as part of our Science learning, we have been planting dwarf french beans. The children have been learning about what plants require to grow and will be in charge of looking after them at school. We will also be using our mathematical and observational skills to watch and measure the progress of our bean plants growth. Hopefully we will see the fruits of our labour and have some delicious beans at the end of it!
As I am sure you will have heard, Year 3 worked very hard to write their own stories based on Marc Martin's book 'A River'. The Year 3 children very proudly shared their books with the children from Mrs Culverhouse's class.
In English, we have started looking at non-chronological reports. We have learnt what they are and the features we might see in them such as headings, subheadings, paragraphs, subject specific language, facts, diagrams etc. We had good fun researching different books and seeing if we could spot the features in them, the children collaborated on this work and showed some fantastic team work. With Years 4 and 5 on residential and Year 6 doing SATs, we were treated to an extra long PE session with Mr Stronge. The first part of the session was spent developing our backhands in tennis, and then as we did so well, we finished the lesson with a big game of dodgeball which was loved by all!
In Maths this week, we have been learning about volume and capacity. We had great fun exploring this in a practical way with green water and different measuring jugs and cylinders! The children have been using their knowledge of reading scales to measure accurately. We also had a wonderful time celebrating the King’s coronation. Here are all the children with their outstanding crowns. We were so impressed by their creativity and resourcefulness. Thank you to everyone who came out to watch and cheer on our Crown parade, it was lovely seeing so many happy faces. Thank you also to everyone who brought food in for the Coronation picnic this afternoon, it was all delicious and enjoyed by all the children.
It has been a bit of a funny week, but the children have done some wonderful learning regardless. In English, we have been focussing on writing speech and using inverted commas. In Maths, we have been finishing our work on mass and will be starting our work on capacity next week. In Science, we have been learning about plants and their different parts. We have been focusing on the petals, stem, roots and leaves this week as well as their functions. Here are some photos of the work we did in our groups: Hope you all have a lovely long weekend.
It was lovely welcoming the children back to school from the Easter holidays. We have started our new humanities topic of Villages, Towns and Cities and have a new book in English which links to this; it is called ‘A Walk in London’ by Salvatore Rubbino, you can listen to/watch it below. The children have been very interested by the locations in London and we have been doing our own research using the chrome books. In PE, we have been testing our reaction times and trying to improve them. In partners, we have been dropping balls and trying to catch them before they bounce- it was quite tricky as we moved further away from each other! Thank you Isobel for being our PE photographer. We also had OCRA come in and run a Futsal competition on Thursday afternoon which was a lot of fun - sorry we didn’t manage to get any photos of this. In Maths, we have started our new unit of measuring mass and capacity. We are currently focusing on mass and have been using scales to measure the mass of objects around the classroom.
Wow, wow, wow!
We have some incredible performers in Year 3. We have been completely blown away by their performance in our Year 3 and 4 play. They were outstanding and did so well learning two quite tricky songs. It was lovely to see lots of friends and family come along to see Oliver and thank you to all the children for putting on such a show. Very, very proud of them. A big thank you to Mrs Dunn who very kindly spent a lot of time (including her own time) teaching us the songs and guiding us through both rehearsals and the performances, as well as choreographing the scenes for Year 3. Mrs Dunn is incredibly talented and provides the children with such wonderful musical experiences. I would also like to say big thank you to Mrs Glover who went above and beyond in sourcing and organising props for all the children; her knowledge of the school and where things are hidden is unrivalled! Finally, the biggest thank you to all of Year 3, you should be so proud of yourselves. Well done. Oliver!
We have spent a lot of this week practising for our show with Year 4. The children have learnt how to manage choreography along with managing their props simultaneously which was a challenge to start with! I have been so proud of how well they have done, we can’t wait for you to come and see it. |
